Fishing in Oranjemund, Namibia
We have a very unique coastline where the Orange River meets and flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Because of this, the currents are often strong, and the sea water has a distinctive brown colour caused by the river’s sediment.
This unique meeting point of river and ocean creates an excellent fishing destination. Visitors can enjoy both river fishing and sea fishing, making it a popular spot for anglers looking for a diverse fishing experience.

At the Oranjemund river mouth (often called the “Breach”), anglers can catch a variety of fish species from both the Orange River and the Atlantic Ocean.
Common species include:
- Kob (Kabeljou) – One of the most sought-after fish in the area.
- West Coast Steenbras – Often found along the surf zone.
- White Steenbras – A prized catch for shore anglers.
- Garrick (Leervis) – Usually caught during the warmer months.
- Shad (Elf) – Seasonal visitors that provide exciting fishing.
- Mullet (Harders) – Common in the estuary and river mouth.
- Blacktail (Dassie) – Found around rocky areas.
- Galjoen – Namibia’s national fish and a favourite among anglers.
- Bronze Whaler Sharks and other shark species – Occasionally caught and released by experienced anglers.
The unique combination of fresh water from the Orange River and salt water from the Atlantic Ocean creates an ideal habitat for many fish species, making the Oranjemund Breach one of Namibia’s most interesting fishing destinations.
