History of Oranjemund
Nestled along the banks of the Orange River in southern Namibia, Oranjemund has a fascinating history shaped by diamonds, exploration, and the determination of the people who built a community in one of the country’s most remote corners.
The story of Oranjemund changed forever in the early 20th century when diamonds were discovered along the Namibian coast. In 1935, rich diamond deposits were discovered near the mouth of the Orange River, leading to the establishment of Oranjemund as a diamond-mining settlement. The name Oranjemund refers to its location at the mouth (mund) of the Orange River.
For many years, Oranjemund was closely associated with diamond mining and operated as a highly controlled mining town.
